Gabrielle Speijer

Radiation Oncologist - Haga Hospital - Netherlands

Healthcare around the world is in the midst of a profound transformation, driven by rapid technological progress that is reshaping how care is delivered and experienced. The real challenge is to ensure that, within this highly digitalised environment, the focus remains on health itself, on what it truly means to be well, for both individuals and society. This transformation demands leadership from the heart of healthcare, with human values as the guiding principle. It is therefore essential to steer decisively towards value‑based, sustainable models and to establish a resilient, future‑proof system as quickly as possible.

As a Radiation Oncologist at Haga Teaching Hospital and founder of CatalyzIT (“Only impact for health!”), Gabrielle combines her clinical expertise with a strong vision for the future of digital healthcare.

Her deeply rooted conviction is that technology (such as AI and digital twins) only has value when it contributes to what matters most: the human connection and communication between doctor and patient. She advocates for the “Data Driven Doctor,” empowering healthcare professionals to take control of data and technology in order to gain a complete picture of each patient’s health. Her work focuses on creating a safe, transparent digital environment that secures trust as the foundation of the doctor–patient relationship.

Dr Speijer previously served on the board of the Dutch Society for Radiation Oncology (NVRO). She holds a board position in the Law & IT department of the Royal Dutch Society of Information Professionals (KNVI). In addition, she advises the Standing Committee of European Doctors (CPME) on digital transformation and serves as the Dutch delegate to the Global Alliance For AI (GAFAI). She is a member of the advisory council of the Value Based Health Care Center Europe and is a Black Belt VBHC Trainer. She has contributed to multiple projects in the fields of AI, software validation, innovation and patient information, and has been closely involved in collaborative initiatives such as Thuisarts.nl, MedMij and SNOMED to promote access to reliable health information.

As a member of the editorial board, Dr Speijer shares her expertise on the need for a digital reinterpretation of the Eed van Hippocrates and highlights how we handle data and steer technology to place human values at the centre of the worldwide transformation of healthcare, a vision that is also reflected in her recognition as a Fellow of KNVI and as a HIMSS Future50 Clinical Leader. She received these distinctions for the way in which she translates the professional values of physicians into a digital ecosystem that can improve health in a sustainable way.
