Geert-Jan van Hal
Born in 1984 with bilateral dysplastic kidneys, Geert-Jan van Hal is living proof of the extraordinary. While unilateral kidney dysplasia can be treated, bilateral dysplasia is generally incompatible with life – yet he survived. This unique experience shapes his perspective as a lifelong patient, advocate, and end-user of healthcare innovations.
Geert-Jan closely follows developments in both medical and digital healthcare, always viewing them through the lens of patient needs. For him, technology is only part of the equation; true progress comes from designing solutions that are simple, human, and driven by the real needs of patients and end-users. His guiding principle is clear: the question must always be, “Does this help the patient?”
Believing that the future of healthcare lies in meaningful, patient-centred innovation, he advocates for a shift from technology-led to need-led development. The challenges ahead, he stresses, require solutions that remain grounded in humanity.
“Together we care.”
